If you’ve been instructing scuba diving for a while and crave a new challenge, consider enrolling in the TDI technical instructor course.

Each stage of this instructor program is overseen by a TDI instructor trainer. As you progress through the levels, you’ll need to meet specific prerequisites, including a minimum number of students at the previous level. This process showcases TDI’s commitment to maintaining high standards among its instructors.

TDI instructor trainers are spread across South East Asia. Additionally, with us, you only need to pay one renewal fee, regardless of the number of agencies you teach under. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need recommendations.

About this course

Who this course is for:

The experienced active dive instructor and proficient technical diver eager to impart their enthusiasm for technical diving to others.

Course prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Certification as a diver for the program they intend to teach
  • Documentation of 100 logged dives in various environments with different depths
  • Evidence of a specific number of dives or hours underwater, depending on the course
  • Certification as an SDI Instructor or equivalent
  • Valid CPR and first aid certification (e.g., current CPROX1st certification)
  • Current medical examination signed by a licensed physician for diving
  • Possession of the minimum instructional equipment as specified in the leadership standards
  • Please note: This is a general overview of prerequisites for the TDI Instructor program. Prerequisites may vary for different TDI Programs.

What you can expect to learn:

The objective of this program is to:

  • Introduce the instructor candidate to TDI
  • Familiarize the candidate with all programs they will be authorized to teach
  • Provide an overview of instructor and student materials for these programs
  • Demonstrate the use of support materials for teaching these programs
  • Instruct the candidate on conducting each program, offering guidance on teaching academics and addressing potential issues in pool/confined water and open water sessions
  • Illustrate the process of registering and certifying TDI Divers and Leadership levels

The program covers the following topics:

  • Welcome and Course Orientation
  • The TDI Instructor
  • Dive Leader Risk Management
  • Instructional Methods
  • Business Aspects of Diving
  • Conducting Specific TDI Diver Courses, including:
    • Classroom, pool/confined water, and open water requirements
    • Necessary materials and paperwork
    • Utilization of the TDI Instructor Guide and Standards and Procedures Manual

Required Skill Performance and Graduation Requirements

The instructor candidate will undergo assessment based on their understanding and capability to teach the requisite subjects and diving skills pertinent to the particular course.

The specific criteria for evaluation may vary depending on the level of the instructor course.

Scuba diving requires a minimum level of health and fitness. Chronic health conditions, certain medications and/or recent surgery may require you to get written approval from a physician before diving. To avoid disappointment, download and review the Diver Medical form to ensure you won’t need a physician’s approval to dive before enrolling in a scuba course. (all students over the age of 45 will need the doctors sign-off, on the attached form). 

If you are booking a last minute course, we can also have our own doctor come to the dive center for your check (1500 PHP fee)
