The SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Instructor (OWSDI) course aims to educate Divemasters or Assistant Instructors holding certification from a recognized dive training organization on effectively fulfilling the role of an open water scuba diver instructor.

This course consists of two main components: an Instructor Development Course (IDC) and an Instructor Evaluation Course (IEC).

  • Individuals eager to share their passion for the underwater realm with others

  • Diver certification held for a minimum of 6 months
  • Documentation of 100 logged dives completed across various environments and depths

Candidates are required to demonstrate proficiency in various areas, including:

  • Conducting a minimum of two classroom presentations
  • Conducting two confined water lessons
  • Conducting two open water lessons
  • Demonstrating preparation, planning, and control in dive and diving activity management
  • Performing a rescue scenario to demonstration standards
  • Executing a 10-minute survival float without swimming aids
  • Completing a 400-meter surface swim within 10 minutes (swim goggles permitted)
  • Completing an 800-meter swim with mask, snorkel, and fins without the use of arms within 17 minutes
  • Performing a simulated unconscious diver rescue from a maximum depth of 6 meters/20 feet and swimming them 100 meters within 4 minutes at the surface

Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are eligible to:

  • Instruct SDI Open Water Scuba Diver, Advanced Adventure Diver Specialty, Computer Diver, Rescue Diver, Divemaster, and Assistant Instructor courses
  • Passing the SDI Instructor written exam or its online equivalent
  • Successful completion of both the IDC and the IEC
  • Demonstrating mature and prudent judgment in class planning and execution
